Famous things they never said (Honest!):

"Elementary, dear Watson!" -- Sherlock Holmes, in anything ever written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle1

"Don't look back.  Something might be gaining on you!" -- Yogi Berra2

"Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson3

"If anything can go wrong, it will." -- Edsel Murphy4

"Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing." -- Vince Lombardi5

1. If anyone would like to verify this, contact me (Elmer), and I will lend you my copy of the complete works of Arthur Conan Doyle.  You will find this phrase used in many Sherlock Holmes stories written by other people, but absolutely nowhere in anything written by Arthur Conan Doyle.

2. It was really Leroy "Satchel" Paige.  If you don't believe me, see http://www.cmgww.com/baseball/paige/quote2.html

3. What Rev. Emerson actually said was "A FOOLISH consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds."  He then went on to say that one must never be afraid to change one's mind if something new comes to their attention.

 4. First of all, it was EDWARD Murphy (actually, Air Force Captain Edward A. Murphy in 1949).  Second of all, what he really said was "If there is any way to do it wrong, someone will".

5. What the much misquoted Vince Lombardi actually said was "Winning isn't everything -- but wanting to win is", which really isn't the same thing at all.
